What is the key to a less stressful life?  I learned this the hard way…

Ever since school started back in September by life has been chaotically busy.  It’s starting to slow down now, but for two and half months I was trying to juggle two jobs, rehearsals every night for a musical I was in, and daily schoolwork on top of that.  I greatly enjoyed everything I was doing; however, with so much on my plate at once, I dragged a lot of stress along with it.  I stressed about:

  • finishing schoolwork in time
  • getting enough sleep
  • completing tasks efficiently
  • and so much more.

As a result of having no extra time, some things in my life slacked.  One of those things was my daily prayer.

Instead of making daily prayer a priority and working my schedule around it, I put it off until the end of the day.  However, by that point it was late and I was so tired I could only get out a few words before falling asleep.  I let my prayer slack because I thought it would be better since I would get more sleep, but on the contrary it was worse.

I would just make an excuse telling myself, “God understands that I’m so busy and He won’t be mad at me for this once.”  No, Jesus won’t ever get mad at me for not praying.  He doesn’t need my prayers.  But I need him.  And now I know why.

Looking back on the past two and half months…

I see the root of my stress was my lack in daily prayer.

Since I didn’t take the time to quiet my soul in a peaceful prayer, my brain was always on high.  Since I didn’t put extra effort to spend time with God, I lost sight of His constant presence and forgot that He will take care of me and I don’t need to worry.  Since I didn’t take the time to pray, I felt an ache in my soul to be in His presence on a daily basis.  Prayer brings me back to the center and purpose of this life: my spiritual journey.

The spiritual journey is the heart of life here on earth and everything else I do physically and mentally should help advance my spiritual journey to Christ and Heaven.  Just as we humans can’t go a day without breathing, likewise we Christians can not go a day without praying.  How can we grow, trust, and do God’s Will if we don’t first let God show us how through prayer?

If you want to have less stress, delve yourself in daily prayer and lay yourself down in complete trust at Jesus Christ’s feet.

He will take care of you.  You don’t need to worry.

Prayer is the place of refuge for every worry, a foundation for cheerfulness, a source of constant happiness, a protection against sadness” (St. John Chrysostom).
